Sambalpuri Ikat

Sambalpuri Ikat - A timeless craft with roots tracing back to the mid-14th century, when over 100 weaver families were brought to Patnagarh by Sri Ramai Deva of the Chauhan dynasty. Evidence from Khandagiri caves suggests weaving in Odisha dates back to before 600 B.C.
The Place: Sambalpur, a cultural hub, was ruled by Gond, Binjhal, Ganga, Kadamba, and Chauhan dynasties, enriching its weaving heritage.
Sambalpuri Ikat vs Others: Unlike geometric designs elsewhere, Sambalpuri Ikat features intricate curvilinear patterns like conches, flowers, fish, and temples. Its harmonious, rainbow-like color blending and unique floral/animal motifs set it apart.
Uniqueness: The "bandha" (tie & dye) technique dyes and binds patterns into threads before weaving, creating magical, artistic designs passed down through generations.
