Two legends surround the origin of Kutch shawls. One tells the tale of a rich Rabari girl who settled in Kutch with her personal weaver. As the weaver's family grew, they spread to different settlements, weaving their magic into the fabric of Kutch.

The other legend speaks of Ramdev Peer, a saint who came to Kutch on a pilgrimage. His followers built a temple and brought weavers from Marwar to tend to it. These weavers, the Meghwal community, brought their skills and traditions, enriching the cultural heritage of Kutch.
